Liahona Instructions w/Picture

Submitted by Cheryl Raab-

I just finished my model of the liahona and thought I would share the components that made it up.  I will send a picture to the webmaster for those interested.

Materials used:
  • 2 small colanders ( $1.00 store)  Any small bowls would work
  • A large spindle from Michaels  $2.49
  • various gold laces and trims from Walmart  $3.00
  • Brass paint   Walmart            1.47
  • woodlets, beads, brads buttons (whatever you can find or have on hand)
  • wood circle for lid.  ( could use cardboard, plastic canvas)
Assorted items stolen (borrowed) from my husbands garage and workshop

I cut out the bottom of one of the colanders so you could see into the Liahona.  ( I had to use a hammer and scissors etc. to get it out)
This step is optional but very effective.  I found some “stuff” in my husbands garage that looked like pointers.  I used washers, anchors and other stuff and a large screw and attached it all to the bottom bowl with a washer and screw.  So when you look into the liahona you see this object that looks like a compass or similar.  I tried to find something at Michaels, watch mechanism etc but came up with this instead.
I taped the two colanders together with packaging tape.   I added some of the wooden accessories on the outside of the colander and attached the brads though the holes in the colander Sprayed it brass colored Attached more gold trim, beads etc.
Painted the wooden spindle brass colored Added trim to spindle Glued spindle to wooden base to be used as lid for opening in balIt is larger than actual size but will work well. I intend to use it through out the year, giving special instructions to the class when needed, counsel when things are not going right, etc.  I will set it outside the class door and have the students check the instructions when needed.
This was very inexpensive to make and using the colanders or bowls was easier than a hamster ball or other things.   Here is the finished product:
